At the time of death, the way you think and what you think is particularly powerful and significant because it can steer the direction you move in after death.  Therefore, it is very important that you be in a positive state of mind while dying.  If, throughout your life, you have spent most of your time in a state influences by the afflictions, then certainly as you are dying the afflictions will come up again and will determine your direction.  If, on the other hand, you have devoted most of your time to a state of mindfulness, in which you have remedied the afflictions as they arose, then this habit which you have cultivated will also emerge at the time of death and will help you accordingly.
