A course for complete beginners that will start from the alphabet and give students a good foundation in reading, writing, and basic conversational skills.

This is a course for people who have completed the Beginning Tibetan class in a prior year or who know how to read and have some conversational skills.

Translating Verse I. An introduction to the basic issues of translating verse into English and emphasizing practical experience.

A group of retreat on the chenrezik pratice with meditation instruction as well as teachings on important mind training texts and daily teaching on The way of the Bodhisatava.
The students in all classes will also receive daily teachings on Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva with Khenpo Karma Choephel, covering chapters six through eight.

An introduction to the basic techniques of translating Tibetan verse into English verse. This verse will give an introduction to different types of English verse and give students practical experience in rendering Tibetan verse into clear, natural, and rhythmic English verse. There will be discussion of the motivation and reasons for translating verse, issues related to songs and melodies, and the advantages and disadvantages of formal verse.
In addition to the translation classes, there will be daily classes on Tibetan grammar and a dharma class on Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva with Khenpo David Karma Choephel.
Students should bring a short to medium length song, aspiration, or other text in verse of their own choosing to work on as a final project.
Students should have an intermediate (B1) or higher level of Tibetan.
For practitioners who wish to develop and intensify bodhichitta.
During this five-week retreat, participants will do four meditation sessions per day of Chenrezik practice as well as daily classes in Shantideva’s Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva. There will also be instructions on the Chenrezik practice, The Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva, and Shamar Könchok Yenlak’s Calling the Guru from Afar.
Tuition is free; students staying in the monastery guesthouses will be expected to pay for their room and board.
