SUMMER RETREAT-YARNEY BEGINGS

The Summer Rain Retreat, known as Yar Ney in Tibetan (དབྱར་གནས།), will commence from 21st July to 2nd September, 2024, at Thrangu Monasteries in Nepal and India. This retreat holds profound significance in the monastic calendar, dating back to the time of the Buddha.

Traditionally, during the rainy season in India, the Buddha established this retreat to provide monks and nuns a focused period for study and practice while avoiding harm to insects and other creatures. It serves as a time for the monastic Sangha to gather, deepen their understanding of the teachings, and uphold the traditions taught by the Buddha. During the Summer Rain Retreat, the Sangha observes the Three Daily Practices and follows the Vinaya scriptures, including a formal midday meal. These practices honor the Buddha’s guidelines and commemorate his compassion and teachings.

The Summer Rain Retreat also presents an opportunity for the lay community to deepen their connection with the Sangha and enhance their own spiritual practice. Historically, during the time of the Buddha, lay people would generously offer food to the Sangha throughout the retreat and provide monks and nuns with new robes at its conclusion. Today, this tradition continues, providing individuals with a chance to practice generosity by making offerings to the Sangha. Today, it remains a time for generosity through offerings to the Sangha, fostering faith, and honoring the enduring legacy of the Buddha’s teachings over 2600 years.
